Magazine articles:
Providing content along the great, glossy way
Magazine articles capture a reader's imagination the way few other forms of writing can, and for that reason, writing for magazines is a writer's dream.
There's something about having a lot of space (magazines tend to allow you to write more lengthy articles than newspapers or other publications) and something great to fill it. Magazines are also the great, glossy way -- an opportunity for the common man or woman to make it in publishing. Magazines are always looking for freelance writers of varied backgrounds and experiences.
Where substance and style converge
Ever since I can remember, writing has been my passion. My dream was to one day become a magazine writer. I went on to become a writer for the magazine's less tidy cousin, the hurried and harried newspaper. But never mind. Magazines remain a singular passion for anyone who yearns to tell stories that need to be told, and to do it in a way that engages the reader. To me, a good story is something that takes you to a place you have never been before, so that reading becomes a great vacation -- and an education -- for your mind.
Where there is a passion, a specialty magazine is sure to follow
Magazines are the most democratic of publications because there
is quite literally a magazine for everything and everyone. From aquarium
hobbyists (Aquarium) and anglers (Field and Stream)
to news junkies (Time) and pop culture aficianados (Entertainment
Weekly), nearly every segment of society has its own magazine.
No matter your passion, hobby or interest, there is a publication out
there for you, whether as a subscriber or as a writer. If there isn't
a magazine for your interest, perhaps there is room on your resume for
another title -- publisher!
Writing for magazines takes patience and perserverance
I find that if you are passionate about a topic, and if you can pitch it well, you will generally always find a magazine that is willing to publish your work. The key is to be highly motivated and utterly original. Remember, you are going to have to sell the magazine on your story just as you have to sell an employer on the benefits of hiring you. With dedication, you can do it!
